3.Normally live in a solitary life, but come together in swarms during dry spells.

4.Fly rapidly in swarms of Lakhs.

5.Harmless to humans.

  • There are no other species on the planet that responds as quickly and as dramatically to the good times as the desert locust.

  •    Eggs that have remained in the ground for 20 years begin to hatch.

  •    The young locusts are known as hoppers,  for at this stage they are flightless.

  • They find new feeding grounds by following the smell of sprouting grass.

  •  Normally it takes 4 weeks for locusts to become adults, but when the conditions are right as now their development switches to the fast track.

  •  As the vegetation in one place begins to run out ,the winged adults release pheromones, scent   messages which tell others in the group to move on.

  •  And when groups merge they become a " swarm."

  •     An adult locust eats it's entire body weight every day.

  • And a whole swarm can consume literally hundreds of tons of vegetation.

  • They have to keep on moving .

  • The swarm travels with the wind. It's the most energy -saving way of flying.

  • Following the flow of wind, means they're always heading towards area of low pressure places ,where wind meets rain, and vegetation starts to grow.

  • As they fly ,swarms join up with other swarms to form gigantic plagues several billion strong and as much as 40 miles wide.

  • They will consume every edible thing that lies in their path.

  • Swarm of crop eating locusts leave a trial of destruction over India.

  •     Several Indian states woke up to a massive inrush of locusts over the weekend.
  • After wreaking havoc in East Africa the crop eating insects entered India from Pakisthan.

  • And are now haunting farmers in Rajasthan ,Uttarpradesh,Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

  • Farmers in gujarat and punjab also asked to brace themselves for the locust attack.

  • The deadly invaders already left a trial of destruction in several districts.

  • And the scale of damage is likely to worden.

  • In Rajasthan  a swarm even entered a residential area.

  • Drones and planes to be reportedly used to tackle.
The worst attack in 27 yrs.....

  • Locusts can destroy Areas of Crop in just an hour.

  • This season they are flying at a greater height against their basic nature of flying law.

Extra info:Desert locusts are considered to be the most devastating migratory pests in the world.

  • If left unchecked locusts could pose an unprecedented rhreatto ,the farmers already reeling under (covid -19) lockdown.

                   Isn't that  threatening....
